Computer Advice

Here you will find some advice on buying computers and software, and links to some websites you may find useful!

Buying a computer

Rushing out and buying a PC is easy - if you know precisely what you want. If you are not so sure what to buy, do stop and think carefully about what it is you want your computer for. There are lots of computer offers out there, often offering free software and peripheral equipment, so the choices can be bewildering. Here are some tips to bear in mind: -

Don't let yourself be sold a system that's faster than you need. If your requirements are fairly basic (word processing and internet only), you won't necessarily need the latest top-of-the-range model.

Do check that it is possible to upgrade the computer at a later stage using generally available components (Note: with Laptops it is more difficult to do this).

Check carefully the full details of the deal, noting how long the computer is under warranty (on site warranty vs back to base) and how long the supplier is prepared to offer you advice or telephone support.

Don't be tempted by mountains of 'free' software, unless it's all software that you would have chosen to go out and buy.

Decide on the exact specification you want and then get quotes from different suppliers. The basics you will need to decide on are:- the processor speed and make, the amount of RAM, the size of the hard drive, and the monitor type (flat screen/traditional).
